Factors such as the kind of material the guitar strings are made up of, the quality of the strings, the climate and environment at your place, the frequency of use, the frequency of care and maintenance cleaning you have been doing for the strings, and the way you handle the guitar while playing, together dictate the frequency with which you would need to change the guitar strings.

If your guitar strings have got rusted, discolored or broken or if they tend to go out of tune more frequently, if they have lost their tone and sound dull, then you should know that it is time for you to replace the old set of strings with a new set. So, no matter how good the quality of the guitar strings is, no matter how well you took care and maintained your guitar, and no matter how much you have protected your guitar from direct exposure, you will still need to change your guitar strings periodically. It is advisable for beginners to replace the strings on their guitar, every few months.

Start by loosening each guitar string one at a time, until it is slack (you can also consider using a string winder for this purpose), and then cut them off. This will prevent damage to the neck caused by sudden release of the tension, which can cause the neck to snap off. After all the strings have been removed, you can freely clean the area of the fretboard under the strings and in the corner edges, which are usually difficult to reach and clean every time before and after use. After unwinding the old string set, simply straightening out the olds and take out the old string set from the body.

Then, insert the ball end of the new set of guitar strings into the hole under the bridge and pull the string. After inserting all the new strings in the same way, line them all up in the grooves and secure them all with the pin. Inserts the other end into the hole on the capstan, and secure the string by bending it firmly after leaving the strings a little slack. Now start winding the new string set and simply cut off the excess portions of the strings. Later on you can tune each guitar string perfectly. If you want to learn and master guitar, then you should learn the basic minimum maintenance and repair work of your instrument. In fact tuning and changing the guitar strings do not figure under the category of guitar repair. It is a part of the regular guitar maintenance efforts. Therefore, if you want to learn & master guitar, then learning these basic aspects of handling and maintenance become invariably necessary.
